REFLECTIONS ON SOCIAL COHESION IN EL SALVADOR: A COUNTRY THAT WANTS TO BE "HAPPY"

Massimo Fortunato

Abstract

Through the lens of social cohesion, we can break the deadlock brought about by “weak thought” and define priority actions needed to improve conditions for human development in El Salvador. The climate of insecurity, the negative economic situation many people are experiencing, and the high rates of migration, especially to the United States, are three factors that affect, either directly or indirectly, social cohesion in the country.

In particular, the search for new measures to respond to the increase in homicides in the last year and the generation of knowledge around the economic and social impacts of migration on development pose new challenges that will have to be overcome in order to ensure optimal conditions for human development, for Salvadorans both abroad and at home.

By strengthening social cohesion, through the combined efforts of political and civil society, one can replace fear with optimism. Along these lines, there is also a video that says NO to violence, so that what we have done may represent a seed of serenity.
