The importance of traditional Chinese medicine services in health care provision in China

Zhang Qi, Zhu Liming, Wim van Lerberghe

Abstract

This paper, based on data from the China Monitoring Center for the Quality of Traditional Chinese Medicine Healthcare Services, explores the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) healthcare services, with a focus on human resources and the China Statistical Year Book of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The authors illustrate the importance of TCM for health care delivery in China, the extent of which is often underestimated outside the country. Unlike different forms of traditional and complementary medicine elsewhere, TCM is prominent in China, both in terms of supply and uptake of services and in terms of the attention it gets in the health policy arena.
