Development cooperation as a training laboratory

Alessandra Pierella

Abstract

This article shows how important a period of professional formation can be, such as the traineeship offered by the René Cassin Award, especially for the professional and personal growth of young people interested in starting a career in the international development field. The author analyses some aspects of the world of cooperation for development by highlighting her personal experience in Senegal during and after the work/traineeship period and the differences she noticed between academic teaching and co-development practices in the field. Finally, by discussing the relationship between practice and theory, the links between academia and the professional experience, as well as the approaches and tendencies regarding local development, the article provides food for thought regarding the new practices of cooperation for development in the light of the UN 2030 Agenda.
